So... Funny Thing Happened Last Friday...
(For my Philippine friends who read my multiply/blogger, this is basically a restatement of that post, for the benefit of my lj friends-list)

So, last Friday, I gave my thirty-days notice: As of well, the 28th of March, I will cease to be a member of my current law firm.
Come the 28th, two things happen: first – despite whatever odd jobs I may need to pull to keep from having to mooch off my wife - my primary vocation, my primary occupation will be that of a writer. I have an urban fantasy novel that needs finishing.

Second, I set about trying to establish a publishing house. A digital publishing house (i.e. downloadable ebooks), with a special place for novel length Philippine Speculative Fiction

I know it sounds crazy - wish me luck if I have to explain this to the parents-in-law tomorrow @_ @ - but now is the time to take this risk, before I have any kids, before I have to worry about the health of my mom or my parents-in-law; and I think it's a risk worth taking.

There’s a lot of work to be done yet: a business plan to make, investors to convince, bandwidth to purchase, editors and codemonkeys to hire, marketing strategies to figure out. It will be hard work. It may fail horribly – but if it does, I hope others will learn from my errors and push forward.

But for now, I am throwing my hat in the ring. I am 29 years old and from now on I’m setting out to cross out quite a few things from my list of potential mid-life regrets. If I don’t end up contributing anything to the development of Philippine Speculative Fiction… well, at least no one will be able to tell me I didn’t try.

So. Here I go. I hope someday soon, I'll be publishing ebooks you guys will want to buy :)

The Gurren Lagann is getting to you is what I'll say. I'm part of the Gurren-tai, and the Gurren-tai does the impossible! Who the HELL do you think I am! lol.

I do hope I'll be able to give you something novel-length worth the effort, but not now yet. We'll see. ^^v In the meantime, gambatte, and I hope the in-laws don't whack you.

Heh, wouldn't it be great if I could find a way to make a drill the company logo? *cogitates*

In-laws were very understanding, although it was my wife who did all the talking: she said it would go down better that way. (I just hope they don't think I was too cowardly - I was willing to do it! Scared witless but willing!)

And I will anticipate your novel-to-be eagerly :)

Thanks Tru-chan :) Well, once I start coming out with stuff, if you like what you see you can help me spread the word :) The good thing about ebooks is that they can be sold internationally.

Maybe once I finish my novel you can give it a read too ;) I really admire your writing and I think you'd really be able to tell me if I got stuff like characterization dead wrong @_@

My first and foremost question is: how will you be earning money from the digital publishing house?
touyatouyatouyatouya on March 2nd, 2009 03:04 am (UTC)
Hi Charles :)

Ah, monetization. Nothing is set in stone but here are some avenues I'm looking to explore:
* Itunes downloads - I know someone who already has a company which Apple allows to put up their ebooks on Itunes for paid downloads. I might either course the books through this arm, or simply learn how to get my publishing house accredited itself.
* Direct web-site sales - I'll need to work out the back-end for this, but it seems feasible.
* Through ebook retailer web-sites - again, just an option I'm exploring, but I'd need to seriously examine if the greater visibility of these sites would justify their cut (assuming I'd qualify as a publishing partner). I'm also examining what it entails to, for instance, be a publishing partner for plasticlogic etc.
* Download cards purchased from physical kiosks - using the Symtio (http://www.symtio.com/symtio/control/main) perhaps?

Uh, monetization is the first thing you should figure out...

Agreed, which is why I can't commit to one method or another until I've fully vetted and analyzed the possibilities. The business plan will be done first before I take further steps, but that's still a work in progress at the moment. Lot of work yet to be done as I noted - I just neededto free up my time to actally Do that work. Just giving you a snapshot of the models I'm looking into :)
